Roti - The Scrumptious Indian And South Asian Side Dish Published Jan 20th, 2022
Roti - The Scrumptious Indian And South Asian Side Dish - Quicklly

Phulka, roti, chapati- you may call it anything. In India, at least one meal of a day includes this quintessential flatbread “roti “or else the meal is believed to be incomplete. “Roti” is a word derived from the Sanskrit word “Rotika'' which means bread. It’s as much an Indian cuisine table essential as rice. In general, people think that roti is not very popular in South India as compared to North India. But south Indians do consume roti or chapati often although rice is the staple Indian food there.

Roti in simple words is a flatbread made with whole wheat flour. It is known as “Atta” or wheat flour. It is made with only 3 ingredients- wheat flour, salt and water. Edible oil or ghee are also optionally mixed and then baked in a tawa (skillet). Being the most popular Indian palatable food item, it is recognized as an integral part of Indian culture.

Roti has different varieties and different methods of preparation. It is wholesome and healthy. In India, we have a wide range of bread, particular to the region they have originated from. Chapati, phulka, kulcha, dosa, naan, paratha and many more come under varieties of roti. The diversity of various versions of Indian roti can be best seen in kachoris, pooris, and paranthas. Parantha is prepared by different methods and is popularly served with butter or curd or achaar (pickle). You can serve roti with simple dal or with exotic curries. This rounds off a meal wonderfully and adds welcome protein.

Roti remains unique to the people of the Indian sub-continent and its people have taken it along with wherever they have settled. The popularity of roti stretches from India to America and parts of Europe. Yet, each culture has its extensive history of Chapati and how this side dish came to be so well-known. Although over the years the recipe for Roti has rarely changed. It has quickly been adopted and become a staple food for many other cultures as well as India.

Roti making is a skill that needs a lot of practice. It is one of the easy-to-take-to and yet one of the tricky dishes to make – both shape and softness wise.
